Root Canals (Root Canal Therapy)

Root canal therapy is a procedure to save and repair a tooth that is severely infected or damaged.

Indications for Root Canal Therapy

Severe Tooth Decay

When decay reaches the pulp (inner tissue) of the tooth.

Infection or Abscess

Caused by bacterial invasion of the pulp.

Fractured Tooth

When a crack or chip exposes the pulp.

Repeated Dental Procedures

On the same tooth, leading to pulp inflammation.

Deep Cavities

That cause irreversible pulpitis.

The Root Canal Process

Root canal therapy typically involves the following steps:

  1. Diagnosis and Preparation: Your dentist will take x-rays to determine the extent of the damage or infection. Local anesthesia is applied to numb the affected area to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  2. Accessing the Pulp: The dentist creates an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp.
  3. Removing the Pulp: Using special tools, the dentist carefully removes the pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals.
  4. Cleaning and Disinfecting: The empty chambers and canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria and prevent further infection.
  5. Filling and Sealing: The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The access hole is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
  6. Restoration: After the root canal, the tooth will need to be restored to full function. This usually involves placing a crown over the tooth to protect it and restore its shape and strength.

Root canal therapy helps to alleviate pain, prevent further infection, and save the natural tooth.
